| Description/Historical Information: |
Chauffeur driven streamlined Armstrong-Whitworth car, seen here with the hood down. The vehicle looks brand new, or
it may just have been cleaned. It is unclear if it was privately owned, although a slightly smaller version was owned in 1911 by one of
the two headmasters of Stancliffe Hall.
This is one of four photographs of this car. The three female passengers can be seen in two other pictures although they had moved
themselves around in VLA4931 and VLA4941. The fourth photograph is of the car
and it chauffeur, but without the passengers, on VLA4942.
The women were part of a group who were also photographed in the grounds of Smedley's Hydro on VLA5112.
The house on the corner was named Cliff House, Smedley Street at the time and occupied by Mr John James Wheeldon, a master butcher (1911
census and rate assessment book). |
