| Description/Historical Information: |
Chauffeur driven car with three female passengers, registration number LH419. The car is an Armstrong-Whitworth,
circa 1913, with a body style called torpedo phaeton and produced in Newcastle-upon-Tyne although it was registered in London. An
expert described it as a very well engineered car. Whilst the make was well-known, the vehicle was probably not made in large quantities.
There is an AA badge above the radiator grill, between the headlights, and there are two boxes for tools and spare parts on the running board.
Two of the three passengers can also be seen on VLA4936 and VLA4941 and there is
a fourth photograph of the car and it chauffeur on VLA4942.
They were part of a group who were also photographed in the grounds of Smedley's Hydro on VLA5112.
The house on the corner was named Cliff House, Smedley Street at the time and occupied by Mr John James Wheeldon, a master
butcher (1911 census and rate assessment book). |
