Group of soldiers on the steps. There is a sergeant in the middle of the front row. To his left is an officer, a major
in riding breeches, and on his left is a second lieutenant. Soldiersfront left appear to be holding semaphore flags which were widely
used for signalling in the early part of the war in spite of providing easy targets for enemy snipers. The 2/6th Battalion Sherwood Foresters
(Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire Regiment) was based at the Empire Hotel Buxton between November 1914 and January 1915.
The signalling section was started at Buxton in December 1914. "The section is commanded by Lieut. O'Ferrall a very popular officer
and the instructor is Sergt. Edwards of Matlock, who is exceptionally well liked by his men" (Ashbourne News Telegraph,
25 December 1914).
This photo was published in The High Peak News on 16th January 1915, and the headline read "With the 6th
Notts and Derbyshire Signallers at the Empire Hotel" and below the photo it said that "Above Is a photo of the
signallers who are now stationed at this hotel", confirming what the remaining text indicated. |
