Matlock Board School Pupils, about 1901



Mr. Chippett's School at Riber Castle



Standard VII girls with their teacher Miss Emily Austin* and the school's headmaster Mr James A. Mills. Taken in the playground of the school on Chesterfield Road. The ages of these pupils vary: Beulah Barmes was born in 1917; Bessie Towe in 1918; Mabel Ash and Margaret Harrison in 1919; Fay Adams, Margaret (Minnie) Allsopp, Margaret Bradbury, Gertie Edwards and Doris Travis were all born in 1920.

Middle Row:

Mabel Ash (whose photograph this is), Fay (?) Adams (paper torn at that point), Doris Travis, Kitty Nichols, Muriel ....... , Annie Travis, Peggy Bradbury, Nellie Harrison and Marion Bunting.


*The webmistress notes that Emily Austin (1901-1991) was living with her mother on Smedley Street in 1939. Her father, John Thomas Austin, had been station master at Matlock. She later moved to Rutland Court.
Her surname has been corrected from Austen.
