The Eighteenth Century:
Statute Labour for Mending the Highways, 1761 |
|
|
From early times the common law to
repair highways lay upon the parishes they passed through.
In 1555 "the statute for mending of highways" became
law and every occupier was proportionately liable to contribute
labour.
In 1761 Matlock's inhabitants were required to spend one
day repairing their roads[1].
This was known as Statute Labour.
