William Walker of Dethick (formerly of Riber), yeoman, in his will dated 7 Feb 1631/2 and proved 2 June 1634, bequeathed the sum of xs yearly to be distributed upon the feast of St. Thomas the Apostle to "twentye of the poorest people of the parish of Matlock".
William Walker was to be buried in the churchyard at Matlock after his death, "near where my father's body doth lye".
George Walker, his son and executor, had "bought a book that was kept in the church for the said purpose" [of recording the names].
His name is included on the Charity Board inside St. Giles' Church

The information has been extracted from the parish register. Unfortunately, both the information at the top of the page, written by the then Rector Henry Smith, and the list of recipients are damaged so the names are almost certainly incomplete.

*These words are included in the original text, but there is no accompanying explanation.

The parish registers did not begin until 1637, so this seems to have been inserted.
