NORTON is a pleasant village, township and extensive parish, 2½ miles from the Dore and Totley station on the Midland railway, 4 miles south from Sheffield, 8 north-west from Chesterfield and 164 from London, in the North Eastern division of the county of Derby, extending to Yorkshire, hundred of Scarsdale, Eckington petty sessional division, union of Ecclesall Bierlow, rural deanery of Dronfield, archdeaconry of Derby and diocese of Southwell. The church of St. James is a spacious building of sandstone in the Late Norman and Perpendicular styles, consisting or chancel, nave, aisles, south-east or Blythe chapel, south porch and an embattled tower with pinnacles, containing a clock and 6 bells : the Blythe chapel, a structure of magnesian limestone, was erected by the family of that name in the early part of the 16th century : there are monuments to the Blythe and Bullock families, and a tablet with a medallion portrait, executed by J. Heffernan, to Sir Francis Leggatt Chantrey R.A. who was born here 7 April, 1781, and is buried in the churchyard ; he died 25 Nov. 1841 : there are also several stained windows : the church was reopened in July, 1882, after complete restoration at a cost of £4,000 ; the chancel and Blythe chapel being restored at the sole cost of Mrs. Cammell and family. The register dates from the year 1559. The living is a vicarage, average tithe rent-charge £18, net yearly value £560 (subject to a pension to predecessor) and including 61 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of John Hall esq. and held since 1888 by the Rev. George Walker Hall M.A. of Corpus Christi college, Cambridge. There is a vicarage library, bequeathed by Mr. Neville, a former vicar, and containing about 300 volumes.

NORTON WOODSEATS is an ecclesiastical parish, formed 15 May, 1874. St. Paul's church, erected at Norton Lees in 1877, at a cost of about £4,000, the greater portion of which was given by William Cockayne esq. is a building of stone, consisting of apsidal chancel, nave and a Western turret containing one bell. The register dates from the year 1877. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £280, derived chiefly from the alienation of part of the income of the vicarage of Norton, in the gift of the vicar of Norton, and held since 1874 by the Rev. William Mercer M.A. of Corpus Christi college, Cambridge. There is a Free Methodist chapel at Norton, a Methodist New Connexion chapel at Woodseats, and a Methodist Mission room in Chesterfield road. Norton Cemetery, situated in Derbyshire lane, was opened in 1869, at a cost of about £4,000, and contains a monument erected by subscription to William Swift, a local genealogist : the cemetery is under the management of a burial board of 10 members. Several small charities, bequeathed by benevolent individuals in 1674 and 1784, produce a sum of £70 yearly, for the poor of this parish: Sir F. L. Chantrey R.A. left £100 yearly to the poor of the parish, which amount is divided between five old men and five old women. The Norton Ploughing Society meets at "The Bagshawe Arms ;" F. W. Bagshawe esq. president. Scythes, sickles and saw files are made in the township. Norton Hall, a handsome stone mansion, in a finely-wooded park, is the seat of Bernard Cammell esq. ; The Oaks is the residence of Francis Westby Bagshawe esq. D.L., J.P. ; Chantry Grange, of Col. Nathaniel Creswick, and Grange House, of Mrs. Gladwin ; Norton House has been rebuilt and is the residence of Edward Montague Earle Westby esq.- Bernard Cammell esq. who is lord of the manor and lay rector of Norton and Coal Aston, CoI. Edward Strelley Pegge-Burnell J.P. of Winkburn Hall, Notts, Francis Westby Bagshawe esq. J.P., D.L. of The Oaks, Henry Cunliffe Shawe esq. J. P. of Weddington Hall, Nuneaton, and the representatives of the late Mrs. Hatfield are the principal landowners. The soil varies; subsoil, various. The chief crops are wheat, oats, turnips and hay. The acreage is 4,437 ; rateable value, £19,876; the population in 1881 was 2,800; in 1881, 3,759.
